Amid the tragedy that has shaken Colombia following the powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake, which struck on the morning of Monday, August 10, a moving scene captured in Cali has become a symbol of hope.
A video, which was released and went viral on social media, “captured” the moment when rescue crews managed to pull out alive a six-month-old infant who had been trapped under the rubble of a collapsed building.

Search efforts were in full swing amid the building’s rubble when rescuers detected signs of life.

Beneath tons of concrete, however, it wasn’t just the six-month-old boy who was trapped. His mother was trapped alongside him, trying to protect him amid the rubble.
The dramatic rescue moved the entire country, offering a glimmer of hope amid the images of destruction left in the wake of the powerful earthquake.
Hospital Floors Collapsed – Patients Trapped and 600 People on the Streets
Meanwhile, the situation is dire at a major hospital in Cali, in western Colombia, where sections of the upper floors collapsed, including areas of the pediatric ward.
As a result of the collapse, patients were trapped under the rubble at the city’s University Hospital, while approximately 600 people had to be evacuated and received medical care on the street, amid the rubble.
The hospital director, Irne Torres Castro, told the Caracol television network that emergency teams are racing against time to free those who remain trapped in the rubble.

According to him, approximately 30% of the hospital’s infrastructure was affected by Monday’s earthquake. The damage affects three floors that housed the Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, and part of the Neonatal Unit. At least four people have been pulled from the rubble, while several patients were evacuated from the hospital and transferred to other medical facilities.
The governor of Valle del Cauca, Dilian Francisca Toro, stated in a post on X that people remain trapped, adding that firefighters and military personnel are working to rescue them.

This hospital is one of several healthcare facilities in the city that were forced to suspend operations and evacuate due to structural damage, according to local authorities.
Videos posted on social media capture the dramatic moments of the evacuation, with rescue workers carrying patients on stretchers, while doctors and nurses have gathered in the hospital courtyard.
