Germany is facing a second attempted act of sabotage on its power grid, and local police announced today that they are investigating an attack on a substation in the western city of Bergheim.

A police spokesperson stated that they are investigating a premeditated act of vandalism against technical infrastructure that occurred yesterday, Tuesday, at 9:00 p.m. (Greek time), but added that power supply to the area has not been affected.

“We are not working on the assumption that this was a technical malfunction, but rather a deliberate act,” said the police spokesperson, without providing further details or specifying the nature of the damage.

Also yesterday, Tuesday, rockets carrying conductive material caused damage to power lines in the eastern German state of Brandenburg.

Amprion, the company that operates the electricity transmission grid, stated in a press release that an external intervention is likely behind the incident in western Germany and that there were no any issues with power supply or grid stability.

The German electricity company RWE stated in a separate announcement that, due to the incident, it had to take lignite-fired power plants with a total capacity of 4.200 megawatts.

It added that the lignite-fired power plants in Neurath and Niederaussem will be reconnected to the grid within the next few days and that it is in close contact with the authorities and Amprion.

German authorities are on high alert for attacks on critical infrastructure.

Berlin accused Russia yesterday, Tuesday, accused Russia of attempting an attack with an unmanned aircraft against a Ukrainian cargo plane last month at Leipzig/Halle and ordered a series of measures to be taken in response.
