Saudi Arabia’s Civil Defense Agency today lifted the alert after issuing warnings—for the second time—about the risk of an airstrike on Riyadh and the city of Al-Khartj, east of the capital, amid an increase in attacks by the pro-Iranian Houthis in the Gulf nation.
These were the first alerts for the capital since the Houthis in neighboring Yemen escalated their attacks against Saudi Arabia.

Journalists from Agence France-Presse and Reuters in the Saudi capital reported hearing two loud explosions.
The warnings were issued a few hours after the Houthi military spokesman stated that the group had foiled “criminal attempts”—which were not specified—in the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, accusing Saudi Arabia and promising a response.
There was no immediate comment from the Saudi government’s press office regarding the Houthis’ announcement.
The Houthis, who control Yemen’s most densely populated areas and much of the northern part of the country, have been launching attacks against Saudi Arabia since they announced a naval blockade against Riyadh in July, targeting Saudi ships in the Red Sea. The pro-Iranian organization claims that the Saudi Arabian Air Force has carried out hundreds of airstrikes in recent days.
The UN Security Council, in a statement issued yesterday, “condemned in the strongest terms the Houthis’ ongoing attacks against the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, including attacks targeting non-military and energy infrastructure, which have resulted in the injury of civilians, including women and children.” In the statement, the Security Council also condemned “the Houthis’ military escalation in Yemen.”
