A Russian missile attack killed 10 people in a village in the northeastern Kharkiv region of Ukraine, said President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, adding that Kyiv would respond to the attack.
There were no immediate comments from the Russian side regarding the attack, in which at least 18 people were also injured, according to the regional governor.
“This morning, the Russians launched a brutal attack on a busy intersection in Pechenikhi, in the Kharkiv region, where the post office and shops are located, and there are only apartment buildings in the surrounding area,” Zelenskyy said in a post on the X platform. “We will definitely respond to this Russian attack,” he added.
The video broadcast by Reuters from Pechenychi shows covered bodies lying on the ground, burned-out cars, and damaged buildings.

Russia intensified its airstrikes against Ukraine over the summer, seeking to exploit Ukraine’s critical shortage of interceptor missiles needed to shoot down ballistic missiles.
The United Nations reported last week that civilian casualties from the war in Ukraine rose by nearly a third on a monthly basis in July. The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine stated on the X platform that it is gathering information regarding the attack on Pechenychi and its impact on civilians.
Ukraine has also intensified its attacks against Russia, targeting oil facilities and logistics infrastructure in an effort to undermine Moscow’s ability to wage war. Today, the mayor of Moscow stated that Ukraine had launched 620 drones against the Russian capital and surrounding areas, in one of Kyiv’s largest airstrikes in the region
Both Russia and Ukraine deny that they deliberately target civilians in their attacks. The attack on the village of Pechenikhi left at least 18 people injured and caused damage to 10 private buildings, a café, a post office, five stores, and 15 cars, according to the governor of the surrounding region, Oleg Sinehubov, in a post on the Telegram messaging app. According to preliminary information, Russia used two small “Banderol” cruise missiles in the attack, as reported by the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine.
A local official told the state broadcaster Suspilne that the attacks struck the central part of the village, where the café, the post office, and shops are located.
