“The cowards ruined everything”: Pezeskian accuses the U.S. of causing the failure of negotiations to reach an agreement

Despite the sharp rhetoric, he argued that the two sides should make a fresh attempt to reach an agreement

Iranian President Masoud Pezeskian, launched a fierce attack against the United States, blaming Washington for the failure of negotiations with Tehran.

Despite his sharp rhetoric, however, he argued that the two sides should make a fresh attempt to reach an agreement.

His remarks were broadcast on Saturday, October 24, on Iranian state television and come at a time of heightened tension in relations between the two countries. The purpose of the talks is to reach an interim agreement, though no clear timeline has yet been presented for the resumption or conclusion of the talks.

“We were in negotiations”

Pezeskian directly accused the U.S. of undermining the effort to reach an agreement. “We were in negotiations; the cowardly Americans ruined everything,” he said pointedly.

At the same time, however, he was quick to emphasize that he still considers it necessary to complete the process. “I still believe we should move forward and complete it,” he said, sending a message that Tehran is not permanently closing the door on negotiations.

His remarks combine two elements: on the one hand, a strong condemnation of the U.S. stance, and on the other, an insistence on the possibility of a new diplomatic effort.

The Conditions and Obstacles

The disagreements between the two sides, according to the same sources, center on the terms of a potential agreement, the implementation of previous commitments, and issues related to the security of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

Tehran appears to be linking progress in the talks to the lifting of restrictions, adherence to earlier agreements, and the resolution of disputes surrounding the Strait of Hormuz. For its part, Washington is reportedly maintaining open channels of communication through intermediaries, though no substantial progress has been recorded.

The Iranian president had also stated on October 21 that talks cannot move forward as long as the United States maintains threats and sanctions against Iran. At that time, he also called on Washington to honor the commitments it has made.

An Open but Difficult Diplomatic Arena

Pezeskian’s new statement indicates that the Iranian side wishes to appear willing to make a new effort, but under specific conditions. The use of particularly harsh rhetoric against the U.S. underscores the depth of mistrust, while the reference to the need to “complete” the process indicates that the diplomatic channel has not been abandoned.

The available information does not mention a specific date for a possible resumption of talks, nor does it provide a detailed framework for the content of a new agreement. What is certain is that Tehran blames Washington for the impasse, while at the same time stating that it still sees room for compromise.

This development keeps the question front and center as to whether the two sides can return to substantive negotiations, despite the climate of mutual suspicion and open disagreements on key issues.
