As a continuation of the Houthi rebels’ retaliatory attacks against Saudi Arabia for the country’s intervention in Yemen to prevent it from falling under Iranian control, international relations expert Petros Zarounas views the double attack on Riyadh Airport—which left 14 dead and dozens injured—as part of this pattern.
Appearing as a guest on the “Alpha Kalimera” program, he noted that the Houthis’ choice of targets is aimed at striking Saudi Arabia’s energy and tourism sectors, as a parallel action to the naval blockade imposed in the Red Sea. Mr. Zarounas also explained that the U.S.’s reluctance to intervene appears to stem from the fact that American commercial and military ships are not being hindered by the Houthis.
When asked about the possibility of the “strikes” being expanded, Mr. Zarounas noted that, at present, talks appear to be underway to de-escalate the situation, with Saudi Arabia reaching out to Iran.
