The Iranian Revolutionary Guards announced today that they had struck a Togolese-flagged oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz, in a statement carried by the official Iranian news agency IRNA.
“The Togolese-flagged tanker Trend was struck and came to a halt after a fire broke out” on board, according to the statement, which refers to an attempt at “illegal passage” through the strait.
Last night, Thursday, the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) maritime security intelligence service, which operates under the British Ministry of Defense, reported a “security incident in the Strait of Hormuz, 16 nautical miles (editor’s note: nearly 30 kilometers) northeast of Khasab, Oman,” adding that the crew is “safe” and no “environmental impact” was observed.
The UKMTO did not specify which vessel was involved; it is unclear whether the information referred to the same vessel that the Revolutionary Guards reported having struck.
