The head of Iran's top security authority today rejected any dialogue with the U.S. until the conditions set by his country are met, after U.S. President Donald Trump said he was “open” to talks aimed at ending the war.
“Do not let yourselves be distracted by the contradictory signals from the U.S. president, who swings between ‘no negotiations’ and ‘we are ready for talks’” with Iran, wrote Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, in a social media post.
“No talks until Iran’s conditions are met. Period!” Rezaei added in his message in English, which appears to be a direct response to statements made yesterday, Monday, by Donald Trump.
The U.S. president noted once again that he is “open” to talks with Tehran.
“The failed nation of Iran wants a deal—quickly and desperately. I will decide whether the U.S. chooses to engage—an idea to which we are open,” he wrote in a post on Truth Social.
Tehran is demanding that Washington permanently end the war and all attacks against Iran and its allies in the region, including the Shiite Hezbollah movement in Lebanon.
Iranian authorities are also demanding the lifting of the U.S.-imposed blockade on its ports, full compensation for the damage caused by the war, the lifting of sanctions that are crippling its economy, as well as the unconditional unfreezing of its assets that have been frozen abroad.
Since the outbreak of the war, Iran has blocked the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, which has caused oil prices to skyrocket and is weighing on the global economy.
