Israeli and Jordanian forces intercepted an Iranian missile today that was targeting the Jordanian city of Aqaba, near the Israeli city of Eilat on the Red Sea, the Israeli military told Agence France-Presse, after Amman denied reports of an evacuation of the city’s airport and port.
For their part, the Jordanian Armed Forces reported in a statement that they had shot down three Iranian missiles targeting the country, without providing further details on the location, while a fourth missile fell in a remote area in the southern part of the country.
Responding to a question from AFP following reports of explosions near Eilat, a military spokesperson said that Israeli and Jordanian forces had intercepted “both” missiles.
A few minutes before this announcement, the Israeli military had said it had detected missiles launched from Iran toward Aqaba and warned of possible “consequences” on Israeli territory.
Air raid sirens also sounded in the Jordanian capital, Amman, as well as in other parts of Jordan.
The Jordanian government had previously denied that the international airport and port in Aqaba had been evacuated, as the U.S. Embassy in the country had announced shortly before.
“The international airport and port in Aqaba, in southern Jordan, were evacuated due to a ‘specific and credible threat.’ We strongly advise all Americans to avoid traveling to either the airport or the port. Continue to follow all safety instructions from the Jordanian authorities,” the U.S. Embassy in Amman had stated earlier.
Brigadier General Yadollah Javani, commander of the Revolutionary Guards, noted in a post on Telegram that Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has dealt “heavy blows to U.S. bases in Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, and other nations, and this intensity will continue.” “The Americans are trying to offset their defeat in this war through military actions and restore the Strait of Hormuz to its pre-war state, but they will certainly not succeed,” He also vowed “revenge and punishment” for those who killed Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, “and these individuals must say goodbye to peaceful sleep and comfort.”
Earlier, Iran had reported that the United States had attacked a nuclear power plant under construction, while Kuwait noted that a power and desalination plant had been targeted for the second time in two days.
