The Iranian judiciary announced today that two men alleged to be responsible for the deaths of police officers during the anti-government protests that rocked the country in December and January.

According to judicial authorities, Erfan Esfandiyari and Gol-Mohammad Mohammadi “tied police officers to a road sign with ropes, injured them by throwing stones, doused them with gasoline, and set them on fire” in Isfahan (central Iran).

According to the indictment, the two men “filmed the murder scene and transmitted the footage to television networks” abroad.

Erfan Esfandiyari and Gol-Mohammad Mohammadi were executed today after their sentences were upheld by the Supreme Court, the judiciary clarified.

The statement does not specify either the date of their arrest or that of their trial.

In December, a movement challenging the government—which began as a protest against the rising cost of living—quickly turned into massive anti-government demonstrations that peaked on January 8 and 9 January.

The Iranian government reported more than 3,000 deaths, attributing the violence to “terrorist acts” orchestrated by the United States and Israel. Foreign-based nongovernmental organizations, for their part, spoke of a crackdown that caused thousands of deaths.

U.S. President Donald Trump had threatened at the time that he would intervene militarily in Iran.

On February 28, Israel and the U.S. launched a joint attack against Iran, sparking war in the Middle East.

Since then, arrests and executions have surged in the country in connection with the war as well as with the protests earlier this year.

According to NGOs, including Amnesty International, Iran is the country that resorts to the death penalty most frequently after China.

Authorities executed more than 1,639 people in 2025, the highest number of executions since 1989, according to the NGOs Iran Human Rights, based in Norway, and Ensemble contre la peine de mort (ECPM), headquartered in Paris.
