The Israeli army announced last night that it had killed an “armed” militant in the part of southern Lebanon under its control, where it is engaged in hostilities with the Shiite Hezbollah movement, which is aligned with Iran.

Soldiers “located an armed terrorist operating inside the security zone in the Majdal Zoun sector,” the Israeli Defense Forces said in a statement, adding that they “opened fire” and “neutralized” the man. They did not specify whether he belonged to the Shiite movement.

According to the official Lebanese news agency ANI, an Israeli helicopter carried out “a mop-up operation in the area” of Majdal Zoun and “fired five missiles” at the village.

The agency did not immediately report any casualties. However, it reported that another Israeli strike, in the village of Mansouri, wounded one person. It also reported Israeli artillery fire in other parts of the area.

Hezbollah is accused of dragging Lebanon into the war in the Middle East on March 2, when it attacked Israel to “avenge” the death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who was killed in the first U.S.-Israeli airstrikes against Iran on February 28.

Israel retaliated by launching a large-scale bombing campaign and a ground invasion that lasted more than three months.

The “memorandum of understanding” signed by the U.S. and Iran on June 17 led to the implementation of a fragile ceasefire in Lebanon, effective June 21, prior to the signing on June 26 in Washington of a framework agreement between the governments of Lebanon and Israel toward “lasting peace” — which Hezbollah rejects.

The Israeli government intends to keep its troops in Lebanon, up to ten kilometers from the border between the two countries, and continues to carry out—more sporadically — airstrikes.
