Israel killed a high-ranking Hamas commander in Gaza

He had been involved in planning attacks and recruiting armed individuals

An Israeli airstrike killed Iz al-Din al-Beik, the head of Hamas’s military wing in the northern Gaza Strip, today, according to Israeli and Palestinian sources.

As Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz stated, the Israeli military targeted and killed Beik, who, according to them, had been involved in planning attacks and recruiting militants.

Medical sources and Hamas sources confirmed that Baik was killed in an Israeli strike targeting a building complex in the Nasr neighborhood of Gaza City around dawn. Health officials said one other person was killed in the attack.

Israel, which claims that Hamas is rearming and carrying out attacks in violation of an October ceasefire, has intensified its strikes against the organization in recent weeks.

The Israeli military claims that this month it has killed at least 20 Hamas operatives, including some it described as high-ranking commanders or individuals who participated in the attacks of October 7, 2023, or who had taken Israeli hostages.

Hamas denies that it is carrying out attacks or rebuilding its arsenal and accuses Israel of undermining the Gaza agreement.

A ceasefire brokered by the U.S. last year calls for the reconstruction of the region. But little progress has been made, as negotiators have not agreed on the terms for Hamas’s disarmament and the withdrawal of Israeli troops. Israeli airstrikes continue.

At least 1,400 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since the ceasefire went into effect, according to health officials in Gaza, while the Israeli military claims that four Israeli soldiers have been killed.

According to Palestinian authorities, more than 73,000 people have been killed in the Israeli operation in Gaza, which began following the Hamas attack on southern Israel in October 2023, in which approximately 1,200 people were killed.
