Pakistan bombed Afghanistan; at least three people were killed

Four others were injured; all the victims were civilians

The de facto Taliban authorities announced today that airstrikes by the Pakistani Air Force claimed the lives of at least three people in eastern Afghanistan.

“At 3:30 a.m., Pakistani jets carried out a bombing raid in the Nurgal area of Kunar Province (in the east), killing three civilians and wounding four others,” Fareed Deccan, a police spokesperson in Kunar, told Agence France-Presse.

The provincial information office provided the same account of the Pakistani airstrikes.

The airstrike was launched two days after a police headquarters in northwestern Pakistan was attacked, leaving at least 31 dead, including 16 police officers.

The local group Ittihad-ul-Mujahideen Pakistan, a faction reportedly linked to the jihadist Movement of the Taliban in Pakistan (TTP), claimed responsibility for the attack in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, which borders Afghanistan.

Pakistan accuses the Taliban of supporting jihadist organizations responsible for bloody attacks on its territory. The de facto government in Kabul denies this.

The most recent and deadliest Pakistani bombings in Afghanistan took place on June 29, when some thirty people were killed in the provinces of Paktia, Paktika, and Kunar.

Islamabad reported at the time that it had targeted factions of the KTP and killed its fighters, but Kabul stated that the victims were civilians.

Relations between the two neighboring countries have been extremely tense since the Taliban returned to power in August 2021. Their border has remained closed ever since.

Earlier this year, Pakistan stepped up its airstrikes, targeting the capital Kabul, among other places. The deadliest attack, on March 16, struck a drug rehabilitation clinic in the Afghan capital, killing at least 269 civilians, according to the UN.
