Donald Trump stated today that no talks with Iran are taking place or have been scheduled, adding that the Strait of Hormuz is open.
“There are no talks or discussions currently underway or scheduled with the Islamic Republic of Iran. The naval blockade remains in full force. The Strait of Hormuz is open and operational. All sea mines have been removed or detonated,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.
Earlier today, Iran’s chief negotiator, Mohammad Bayer Galibaf, stated that the strategically important waterway would remain closed until the U.S. fulfills its commitments set forth in the agreement protocol signed in June.
These conditions include the lifting of the U.S. blockade on Iranian ports, the lifting of oil sanctions, the unfreezing of Tehran’s frozen assets, and an end to threats and military operations on all fronts, Galibaf told the Iranian parliament.
In his post, Trump published a map showing the Strait of Hormuz, describing it as “new American territory,” echoing a sentiment he had already expressed in recent days.
The president first referred to this strategic trade route as “U.S. territory” last week during a rally, in a tone that suggested he was joking.
The Republican president reiterated this idea yesterday while speaking with reporters in the Oval Office, implying that it would be a “very good idea.”
This is not the first time that Trump, faced with a foreign policy obstacle, has made such a bizarre or threatening proposal to annex foreign territory.
Since returning to power, he has threatened to make Canada the “51st” state of the U.S., to occupy Greenland, and has even hinted at taking control of the Gaza Strip—without ever following through on any of these threats.
This new proposal regarding the Strait of Hormuz comes as a peaceful resolution to the conflict between Iran and the U.S. seems further away than ever.
