Trump on Iran: I think the truce is over; they're sick

"I like Erdogan; he wants to buy F-35s," says the U.S. President

Donald Trump reiterated his feelings toward Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Wednesday morning, during joint remarks with Mark Rutte. The U.S. president noted that Turkey is a major military power that wants to purchase F-35s.

At the same time, he reiterated that he is “not happy” with NATO — echoing similar comments he made yesterday at the summit, while he described Iranians as “sick people,” saying he believes the ceasefire is over. However, a few seconds later, he noted that he would allow the negotiations to continue.

The U.S. president emphasized that he is not pleased with NATO regarding Greenland, which he calls “a big problem for us” —as well as because Alliance members did not provide support in the war against Iran. “They were reluctant to help us… but we didn’t need help. In fact, I ran a test; I wanted to see if they’d be there or not,” he noted. “Greenland is very important to the U.S. and Denmark. When Denmark occupied them in a single day, we had already occupied Denmark and returned it for no reason. It’s very important to the U.S. I’m very dissatisfied with NATO.”

Speaking about U.S. support for its allies, Trump notes that Washington has spent “over 1 trillion dollars in the recent past… to protect these countries from Russia, which has nothing to do with us.” “This is a long-standing situation, and they haven’t treated us fairly,” Trump continues, adding that the U.S. “has been treated unfairly.”

Regarding the new Iranian attacks in the Gulf region, Trump spoke harshly about the Iranians: “I think they have no idea what they’re doing. I think they’re incompetent people. This has been going on for 47 years. They tried to get rid of me, but I got rid of all their leaders. I want to thank Mark. I’m not very happy with NATO. I think the truce is over. I don’t want anything to do with that scum. They’re sick people. In my opinion, this is over. The Iranians made a phony deal. We struck a deal with the Iranians. They continued to act as if we hadn’t spoken at all. They can talk all they want. But they’ll just be wasting their time. They’re liars, cheats, and sick people. They killed 35,000 people. People have started asking questions, too. How could we have failed to understand this country? People died. I don’t want to waste my time with these people. Our team can continue the negotiations. I don’t like Iran anymore. They’ve never treated the U.S. fairly. I like Erdogan. He rolled out the red carpet for me.”

And he continued, speaking about his sympathies: “I like Rure, I like other people. I like President Erdogan, I like Bibi, the prime minister in times of war. Erdogan is like me; he has millions of soldiers—Turkey is a military power—but he wants to acquire F-35s. China treats us well, even though 50% of its oil passes through the Strait of Hormuz. I’m a big fan of Xi.”
