British police arrested five men today near a U.S. air base on suspicion of offenses related to the possession of explosives and terrorism. British authorities acted on a tip that three vans were heading toward the military airfield that had been used in the airstrikes against Iran.
U.S. President Donald Trump stated that the suspects were planning to cause “significant damage” and that they had been on Washington’s radar “for some time.”
“We were investigating them. They wanted to cause major damage to our base, and our cooperation with the British worked very well,” the U.S. president told reporters upon his arrival in Chicago for a golf tournament.
RAF Fairford, where the arrests took place, is one of the most important facilities used by the U.S. Air Force in Britain.
