Trump on the AfD’s victory in Germany: “A big night for the populist party”

The U.S. president celebrated the rise of the far right in Saxony-Anhalt

Donald Trump congratulated the Alternative for Germany (AfD) on its victory in the Saxony-Anhalt, calling it a “great night” for a “populist party” that, he argued, reflects citizens’ dissatisfaction with the country’s immigration policy.

The U.S. president commented on the election results in the German state via the Truth Social platform, without, however, specifically mentioning the Alternative for Germany (AfD).

“Wow! The populist party in Germany just had a truly big night. People have finally had enough of the absolutely horrible immigration rules and regulations that have hurt Germany so badly. They’re on the rise, and they won’t put up with it anymore! “MGGA,” Trump wrote, accompanying his post with three exclamation points.

The acronym MGGA is a variation of his well-known campaign slogan MAGA (Make America Great Again), adapted this time for Germany as “Make Germany Great Again.”

In his message, Trump focused primarily on the issue of immigration, arguing that German citizens have rejected the “rules and regulations” that, in his view, have burdened the country.

The U.S. president’s statement comes on the heels of the AfD’s electoral success in Saxony-Anhalt, where the far-right German party saw a significant rise in support.

Trump’s public support for the AfD marks yet another intervention by the U.S. president in favor of European political forces that adopt a tougher stance on issues of immigration and nationalidentity.

Already the official opposition in Europe’s largest economy, Alternative for Germany—with its anti-immigration and pro-Russian rhetoric—dealt a heavy defeat on Sunday to the major ruling party, Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s conservatives (CDU), winning nearly 44% of the vote to 17% in Saxony-Anhalt, a comparatively poor state in the former GDR, in the eastern part of the country, which had until recently been a stronghold of the German center-right.

The result was seen as a political earthquake in Germany, where the far right now stands at the very gates of power in a state for the first time since 1945.

Several figures in Donald Trump’s political orbit—ranging from a former U.S. ambassador to Germany to Elon Musk—have already praised the AfD’s triumphant victory.

The multibillionaire, a long-time supporter of the AfD, was among the first to congratulate the party, which he claims “is not” far-right, commenting in German, “Gut gemacht!” (“Well done”) in a post by Alice Weidel, the party’s co-chair.
