Donald Trump emphasized the close ties between the U.S. and Turkey to Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, saying, “We are great friends; we will always find a way to get along.”. Of particular interest is the U.S. president’s statement regarding the F-35s, in which he said the matter would be reviewed.
“We will decide on the F-35s; we have very good relations. We have excellent relations with Turkey,” he emphasized during their meeting at the White House.
For his part, Erdogan stated that he believes a “favorable decision” regarding the F-35 fighter jets will emerge from the NATO summit in Ankara.
Trump’s Praise for Erdogan
“I’d like to thank you—we’re great friends. The airport is fantastic. You’re a great leader, and we’ve gotten along well from the start. We’ve had a great relationship. He’s someone you have to reckon with,” the U.S. president went on to say.
Trump then made no secret of his disappointment with NATO, saying that the stance of the Alliance’s member states on the war in Iran was not what he had expected and that it had been a test.
