U.S. President Donald Trump told Russian President Vladimir Putin during a phone call with him that he wishes to see an end to the war in Ukraine as soon as possible, which would allow for the full restoration of relations between the U.S. and Russia, according to the Kremlin.
Kremlin adviser Yuri Ushakov told reporters that the two leaders discussed the results of the visit by U.S. negotiators Steve Witkov and Jared Kushner over the weekend in Moscow and Kyiv—which, he said, both leaders assessed “positively” — and added that Putin explained to Trump what he believes the United States can do to help end the conflict.

Putin had also conveyed to Trump his assessment of the situation on the battlefield and made it clear that Russia has no hostile intentions toward Europe, Usakov said.
“Donald Trump clearly emphasized that it is desirable to end the conflict as soon as possible, which would immediately open up prospects —impressive and long-term, in fact—for the full restoration of relations between the U.S. and Russia,” Usakov said.
“In his view, this would have a significant impact on trade and economic relations, offering enormous benefits for both countries. Donald Trump wishes to achieve significant progress during his presidency. Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin supported this approach.”
Ushakov—who said that Putin and Trump had also agreed on the need to continue prisoner exchanges—stated that he was unable to provide further details on the topics discussed, but described the conversation as constructive and noted that the two leaders agreed to stay in touch and speak again by phone should the need arise.
