A small boat capsized on Tuesday night on the Ganges River, resulting in the deaths of 13 children, according to Indian authorities.

The accident occurred in the Vaishali area, in the state of Bihar in eastern India. The 13 victims were all under the age of 15 and were on their way to a festival, said official Varsha Singh, according to the Press Trust of India (PTI).

Police spokesman Subod Kumar told Reuters that six people were rescued, while searches are continuing in the area as the number of people on board the vessel remains unclear.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow over the accident. “My thoughts are with the grieving families at this difficult time. I pray for the speedy recovery of those who were injured,” he said in a message posted on the X platform.
