A two-seater helicopter in Italy struck a cable car line, burst into flames, and crashed below the dam; the moment of the accident was captured on camera.
The fatal flight of the two-seater helicopter took place on the morning of Wednesday, August 26, in the area of the Campiglioli reservoir, at an altitude of approximately 1,400 meters, in the high Andron Valley, near the border between Ossola and Switzerland, according to “La Stampa.”
The helicopter collided with the cable car’s cables
As the helicopter was flying over the artificial lake, it struck the cables of Enel’s service cable car. A loud crash followed, and the aircraft burst into flames before crashing at the foot of the dam’s vertical wall.
The helicopter was flying from the lake toward the valley.
There were two people on board the helicopter, both of whom lost their lives. They were Alessandro Angelo Musincelli, an engineer born in 1964 and a resident of Premeno, and Antonella Pagliarani, born in 1963, the partner of the pilot’s brother and a resident of the greater Milan area.
The two had taken off earlier from the Megolo airfield in Pieve Vergonte, in the Ossola Valley.
Several helicopters rushed to the scene, while ground forces from the Fire Department, rescue teams, police authorities, and the Forest and Mountain Rescue Corps (Sagf) took part in the operation.
Shortly after the tragedy, the pilot’s brother—who was also the partner of the second passenger—arrived at the scene.
“I saw a fireball”
The mayor of Androona Savierano, Franco Borsotti, witnessed the accident from the balcony of his home.
“I saw that helicopter flying first over the Kezio area and then over Cinzino. Then I heard the crash and saw a fireball,” he described.
The accident occurred near the Campiglioli Dam, at an elevation of approximately 1,350 meters. The reservoir is located above Androña Schieranco, in a mountainous area with forests and alpine peaks, and is one of the most famous spots in the upper valley, especially during the summer months.
