Eight people lost their lives today when a charter plane crashed near a remote military radar facility in western Alaska, according to an announcement by the U.S. military command responsible for the Alaska region.
A Cessna 441 operated by the Anchorage-based charter airline Security Aviation crashed around 12:15 p.m. (11:15 p.m. Cyprus time) west of the Long-Range Radar Station (LRRS) at Cape Newham in Alaska, a spokesperson for the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said.
The plane had departed from Anchorage International Airport and was headed for Cape Newham, the spokesperson added. On board were the pilot and seven passengers.
The facility at Cape Newham is part of a network of remote radars that monitor aircraft in Alaskan airspace and along its borders.
