A 39-year-old mother of five met a tragic death in Delaware, U.S., when a hunter shot her after mistaking her for a deer, according to police.

The incident occurred on the evening of Friday, September 18, in the Elendale area, as reported by the New York Post. The victim is Santos Maria Chilel Soto, a resident of Georgetown, and 74-year-old Walter Murhead of Salisbury, Maryland, was arrested in connection with her death.

According to the Delaware State Police, at approximately 7:40 p.m., the 39-year-old woman was walking in an open field with a man and two children. At the same time, Murhedt was hunting deer from a so-called “ground blind,” a low, camouflaged structure that hunters use to avoid being spotted by their prey.

According to the preliminary investigation, the 74-year-old man believed he saw a deer and fired his rifle. The bullet, however, struck Soto. Police officers who arrived at the scene attempted to administer first aid, and the woman was subsequently transported to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Police officers located Murhed at the scene and, as they announced, determined that he was the one who had fired the shot. The 74-year-old was taken into custody, and the investigation was turned over to the Delaware State Police Homicide Unit. He was charged with felony manslaughter due to reckless conduct, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, as well as three counts of first-degree endangerment. After the charges were read, he was released on $43,000 bail.

According to the New York Post, Santos María Chillel Soto was the mother of five children. Following her death, an online fundraising campaign was launched to cover funeral expenses and to transport her remains to Guatemala, where she was from.
