The massive, devastating landslide and flood that swept through northern Nepal on Wednesday, on the border with China, caused the deaths of at least 469 people, according to the latest report released by the country’s police today.
The Chinese authorities, for their part, have reported three deaths in Tibet, an autonomous region of China, meaning that the still preliminary death toll from the disaster stands at at least 472 dead and more than 1,400 missing, including hundreds of foreign tourists.
Meanwhile, Chinese state media reported that a total of 555 stranded tourists were urgently evacuated from the affected area.
“As of now, 499 residents” and “555 trapped tourists have been transported out of the area,” reported Chinese state television CCTV, without specifying their nationalities.
