Donald Trump announced an agreement between Russia and Ukraine on an energy ceasefire, effective immediately, and called on both sides to abide by it.

“Effective immediately, there is an ENERGY CEASEFIRE in the war between Russia and Ukraine. Both sides have agreed. Do not violate it!” the U.S. president stated in his message.

In his announcement, Trump did not specify the duration of the ceasefire, the facilities it covers, or how its implementation will be monitored.

The message specifically concerns the energy sector and makes no mention of a general ceasefire.

Zelenskyy’s Response to Trump

Earlier today, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, stated that his country could hold elections if Russia agreed to a full 60-day ceasefire, responding to the suggestion by his American counterpart, Donald Trump, that Ukraine elect a new leader.

“First of all, with all due respect to President Trump, it is up to our society, our people, to choose one leader or another,” Zelenskyy said in a television interview with ABC News, one day after Trump claimed that Ukraine needs a new president who would agree to end the war.

Zelenskyy said he told Trump’s team that if they truly want elections to be held in Ukraine, then “please, tell Putin to give us two months—60 days of a complete ceasefire—60 days, and we’ll organize elections.”

Zelenskyy’s response comes after Donald Trump launched a public attack against him on Saturday, arguing that Ukraine needs a new leader who would be willing to strike a deal to end the war.

“I suggest they find a new leader who can make a deal. He had many opportunities to make deals, but he didn’t make any,” the U.S. president said, blaming Zelenskyy for the continuation of the conflict.

Trump insisted that the war could have been avoided if he had been in the White House when the Russian invasion began, while accusing the Ukrainian president of repeatedly rejecting opportunities for a peace agreement.

The confrontation is directly linked to Ukrainian attacks on Russian refineries, which Washington is calling for an end to, arguing that they drive up international fuel prices. “We told him: ‘You can do whatever you want in Russia. But don’t hit the refineries, because that creates a problem for the whole world,’” Trump said, arguing that the attacks are causing problems for American farmers and ranchers due to diesel shortages.
