On Monday, Typhoon Dujuan led to the cancellation of 275 flights in Japan and prompted the issuance of instructions for the urgent evacuation of 1.6 million residents to evacuate their homes immediately, as meteorologists warned of the risk of record-breaking rainfall.

Two people were killed when heavy rains triggered landslides in Chiba and Kanagawa prefectures, near Tokyo, authorities reported, according to Japanese media.

On Tuesday morning, the storm moved away from the coast, heading northeast toward the open sea, with winds slightly subsiding, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported.

The typhoon was located about 130 kilometers south of Katsura, near Tokyo, with winds reaching speeds of up to 144 kilometers per hour. More than 9,000 households have lost power in the prefectures of Chiba, Saitama, and Shizuoka, as well as in other areas near the metropolitan region of the Japanese capital.

Landslide warnings have been issued for Tokyo and the prefectures of Chiba, Kanagawa, and Shizuoka.

There is a risk that “the rains will continue” as the typhoon moves northward, Takuya Hosomi of the JMA told the press.

More than 1.6 million residents of the capital and surrounding areas were urged to evacuate their homes in vulnerable areas immediately. However, these instructions are not mandatory in the country.

Authorities also reported one person with minor injuries and nine homes damaged by the typhoon.

Images circulating on social media show flooded streets in front of the train station in Kamakura, a popular tourist destination.

“Many parts of the city have been flooded. Traveling by car is dangerous,” warned Takashi Matsuo, the city’s mayor.

Japan Airlines canceled 135 flights, and All Nippon Airways canceled 140 domestic flights. Meanwhile, several railway companies suspended service on some lines in Tokyo and nearby areas.

The JMA had warned on Sunday that the rain and winds would intensify even before the typhoon made landfall. “Total precipitation through Tuesday (today) could exceed the average for the entire month of September and set a new record,” it noted.

Various events were canceled, including the final day of the Tokyo Game Show—one of the world’s largest video game expos—in Chiba, near the capital, as well as an outdoor music festival and a baseball game.

Flooding also occurred in parts of the city of Ichikawa, east of the Japanese capital.
