A new online video game has sparked strong reactions in the U.S., in which players roam the streets of San Francisco and shoot zombies that, according to the game’s critics, resemble homeless people and drug addicts.

The game’s creator is programmer and entrepreneur Pierre-Louis Biozou, who transformed the Tenderloin neighborhood—known for its serious problems with homelessness and drug use— into the setting of an online action game titled “Tenderloin: Night Shift.”

According to the NYP, the creator unveiled the game on Tuesday (Oct. 13), posting a video on social media featuring scenes from within it. “San Francisco couldn’t fix the Tenderloin. So I turned it into a revenue stream,” he wrote, presenting his creation as a “Call of Duty”-style zombie shooter set on the city’s actual streets.

In the game, which is free and runs in a browser, users can explore a digital representation of the area, wielding weapons and throwing grenades at zombies.

The promotional video shows characters walking with their heads down, while others move around on electric scooters. The game’s environment also features vehicles reminiscent of Waymo’s self-driving taxis, Tesla’s electric Cybertrucks, and artificial intelligence billboards.

A particular type of zombie called “the folded,” which appears with its body hunched forward, has caused quite a stir. This posture evokes images of people under the influence of fentanyl, a fact that reinforced accusations that the game satirizes people struggling with addiction.

“You made a game where people shoot homeless people”

The game’s release sparked a wave of critical comments on Platform X, with several users accusing the creator of turning a real humanitarian crisis into entertainment. One user commented that the developer created a game in which players shoot homeless people, while others called the idea offensive and demanded its removal.

There was no shortage of positive comments, however. Some players said they enjoyed the game, while others argued that criticism should be directed more toward San Francisco’s municipal authorities regarding the situation in the area. When one user called the game unacceptable, its creator replied with the phrase “Why not?”

Pierre-Louis Biozou claims he created the game in just one weekend, using artificial intelligence programming tools, even though he had no prior experience in video game development.

In fact, according to him, the game had already generated about $300 in ad revenue during its first few days of operation. Biosou is the founder of NanoCorp, a company that develops artificial intelligence technologies for the creation and operation of automated businesses.
