An unprecedented incident unfolded in Guatemala when a 15-year-old girl opened her eyes and sat up in her coffin, while relatives and friends had gathered at the family home to say their goodbyes, believing she had died eight hours earlier.
Fifteen-year-old Yuleidy Ixcotoyac (Yuleidy Ixcotoyac) had lost consciousness in the early morning hours of October 10, while her father was driving her to a medical center, according to The Sun.

Her father, Abraham Ixcotoyac, who is an evangelical pastor, pulled over to the side of the road and tried to determine whether his daughter was breathing and had a pulse. Since he could not detect either, he concluded that she had died. However, the minor never made it to the hospital, nor was she examined by a doctor. The family purchased a coffin—without a prior medical examination or a death certificate—and returned home to begin the wake.

The moment the 15-year-old opened her eyes inside the coffin
At around 2:30 p.m. that same day, relatives and friends had gathered at the family home in the community of El Chocote, in the Quiché department of Guatemala, to say goodbye to the teenager.
Her mother, Lesbia Ríos, was leaning over the coffin, weeping, when she suddenly noticed that her daughter had begun to move.
Within seconds, grief turned to astonishment as the 15-year-old opened her eyes and sat up in the coffin, in front of the stunned onlookers.
“I kept saying she was alive, that she hadn’t died,” her mother told local media.
Describing the moment she realized her daughter had regained consciousness, she said: “While I was crying over her coffin, we opened the window and she began to move. She was waking up and suddenly sat up.”
Relatives rushed to help the young girl, offered her water, and lifted her out of the coffin. The incident was captured on video, which was subsequently posted online.
“My heart started to hurt a lot, and then I lost consciousness.”
Yuleidi herself later described what she remembered from the moments before she lost consciousness, explaining that she felt intense chest pain.
“My heart started to hurt so much. It felt heavy, and then everything went dark, as if I had fainted,” she said.
The 15-year-old attributed her return to consciousness to divine intervention.
“I have no words to thank God for everything He has done in my life,” she said, adding, “It was a miracle.”
For his part, her father confirmed that his daughter never made it to a medical facility, as he had assumed she had died during the drive.
“I pulled over to the side of the road, parked the car, and went over to her. I saw that she was no longer alive, that she had died on the way,” he said.
“I realized she was no longer breathing, and I couldn’t feel a pulse in her wrists. It was a very difficult moment for me. She didn’t make it to the hospital,” he added.
From Mourning to Celebrations—What Health Authorities Are Saying
Those who had gathered to say goodbye to the 15-year-old suddenly found themselves celebrating, as the girl, whom they had believed to be dead, had regained consciousness.
Her family spoke of divine intervention, calling the incident a miracle.
According to available information, Yuleidi is conscious and recovering at home, although she reported that her hands are still trembling.
However, Guatemalan health authorities have not released any medical findings regarding the incident, and there is no confirmed medical explanation for what happened.
At the same time, the fact that the minor was not examined by a doctor and no death certificate was issued means that her death had not been officially confirmed, despite her family’s initial belief.
