At least seven people were killed and 34 wounded today following an attack by gunmen inside the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George in southern Jordan, an attack that the interior minister said was carried out by a “group of extremists.” King Abdullah, in a post on Twitter, referred to it as a terrorist attack.
“At least seven people were killed in a shooting at the Greek Orthodox church in the village of Hamoud, in the Karak Governorate, while about 10 others were injured, some seriously,” the Public Security Directorate said in a statement. Twenty-seven of the injured are being treated in the hospital.
“Two gunmen got out of a vehicle and opened fire during a funeral procession leaving the church in Hamoud,” he added, stating that a search operation is underway to locate the perpetrators. Government spokesman Mohammed al-Momani announced the launch of an investigation.

Patriarch Theophilos III of Jerusalem told almamlakatv.com that such attacks “will not drive us from our land.” “If the message aims to uproot us from our holy land and displace us from it, it will only strengthen our attachment to it and our roots in it. And no matter how intense the events around us become or how much they affect us, they will not drive us to abandon our land, for we are the sons of this land, its living roots, and its partners in its history, both present and future, and we will remain here as witnesses to our faith, no matter how great the challenges or how severe the trials may become,” he said.
An eyewitness told the Al Mamlaka television network that the gunmen fired for five minutes before fleeing. According to him, 150 to 200 people were present at the time of the shooting, both inside and outside the church. He confirmed that the attack resulted in numerous casualties, mainly among people between the ages of 50 and 70.
In a message on Twitter, King Abdullah stated: “The terrorist attack against Karak will be met with the harshest response. Those who are deluded into believing they can divide Jordanians with their bullets have no hope in the face of our unity. All Jordanians, from north to south, are partners in the same land and the same destiny, and nothing can separate them. We express our deepest condolences to the families of the martyrs and wish a speedy recovery to the wounded. Every life is precious, and we will strike with full force against anyone who dares to threaten our nation.”
The terrorist attack against Karak will be met with the harshest retaliation. Those who delude themselves into thinking that they can divide Jordanians with their bullets have no chance in the face of our unity. All Jordanians, from north to south, are partners in land and fate, and nothing stands between them. Our deepest condolences to the families of the martyrs and we wish a speedy recovery to those injured. Every Jordanian life is precious, and we will strike with an iron fist against those who dare to threaten our nation

“We will respond to the terrorist attack that targeted Karak with the harshest penalties. And anyone who imagines that the bullets of treason can divide the ranks of Jordanians will fail in their attempt in the face of our resilience and unity. All Jordanians, from the north of the homeland to the south, are allies in our homeland and in our stance, and no act of treason will succeed in dividing their ranks. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the martyrs and our wishes for a speedy recovery to the wounded. “The blood of Jordanians is precious, and we will strike with full force anyone who dares to violate this country’s borders,” he stated in another message.
