Spain is set to face severe storms in the coming hours, following a weekend during which floods caused significant problems. On Saturday night, a woman was swept away by a stream near Barcelona and was found dead yesterday, Sunday.

Due to “extremely dangerous” weather conditions, the national meteorological service AEMET issued a “red alert” for Mallorca —the largest island in the Balearic Islands—and the Valencia region, where the deadliest floods in recent years occurred in 2024.

The regional government of the Balearic Islands has closed schools in Mallorca, Ibiza, and Formentera. In Valencia, train service has been suspended until further notice.

Authorities in Valencia, Catalonia, Andalusia, and the Balearic Islands have already reported hundreds of incidents involving flooded homes and impassable roads, fallen trees, and property damage.

According to the Catalan fire department, a woman who was swept away by a stream on Saturday night in Cabrera de Mar, about 25 kilometers northeast of Barcelona, was found dead in the sea yesterday.

Warning messages were sent to the cell phones of residents of Valencia, Ibiza, and the neighboring island of Formentera, urging them to avoid non-essential travel and to be especially cautious.

In Ibiza, many cars were submerged in muddy water. Seaside resorts, famous for their nightlife, are deserted. The main road to the airport is closed. At least five flights were canceled, 16 were diverted, and others were canceled, according to the state airport operator Aena.

The Spanish military has deployed forces to Ibiza and Mallorca to assist in managing the situation.

In Almería, Andalusia, emergency services reported that “37 rescue operations” had been carried out over the previous 48 hours. On Saturday night, near Málaga, ten people were trapped in a flooded tunnel and were rescued by firefighters.
