The large fire that broke out on Friday in the Fan Mountain Nature Park in western Belgium—which contains sensitive peatlands and pine forests—is now spreading toward Germany. So far, 30,000 stremmata have been burned, and yesterday, hundreds of villagers were ordered to evacuate.
Despite working through the night, firefighters have not yet managed to bring the largest fire in the country’s history under control. “Conditions are complex. Although the intensity has decreased, the winds changed direction several times during the night,” according to a statement from local authorities.

Firefighters from across Belgium, as well as from Germany and Luxembourg, assisted by the military and farmers, have focused their efforts today on the fire front moving toward Germany and hope that the drop in temperature and rise in humidity willhelp them contain the fire’s advance.
Since yesterday, the European Union has deployed three helicopters and two firefighting aircraft from the Czech Republic, Sweden, and the Netherlands to the area.
