VIDEO: New tensions in Yemen; Houthis report dozens of deaths from Saudi strikes

Threats of retaliation are being made, and the conflict in the Red Sea is escalating
ALPHANEWSLIVE

Saudi Arabia, a key ally of Yemen’s internationally recognized government, carried out at least two airstrikes yesterday, Sunday, against a market in the southwestern part of the poorest country on the Arabian Peninsula, according to the Yemeni rebel movement Ansar Allah—also known by the surname of its leaders, the Houthis—which is aligned with Iran—reported dozens of deaths and injuries.

Al-Masirah, a television station affiliated with Ansar Allah, had earlier yesterday reported seven dead and 40 wounded, including five children.

Later, Ansar Allah’s spokesperson for military affairs, Yahya Saria, reported nearly 50 casualties—without distinguishing between the dead and the wounded—and accused the Saudi Air Force of carrying out “two airstrikes against a market” on the outskirts of Taiz.

Sources close to the Houthis cited by Agence France-Presse clarified that nearly 30 of their fighters and eight civilians were killed.

“This blood that has been unjustly shed” will not go without “consequences” for Saudi Arabia, Mr. Saria emphasized.

The major city of Taiz, controlled by government forces, is located on one of the main fronts of the fighting against the rebels.

Footage broadcast by Al-Masirah shows cars with shattered windows and damaged warehouses, with goods scattered about.

Attack and Naval Blockade

After several years of relative calm, Yemen plunged back into war in July, becoming a new front in the broader Middle East conflict.

The hostilities pit Ansar Allah, which controls the capital, Sana’a, and now Yemen’s Red Sea coast, against forces loyal to the government recognized by the international community. The latter, exiled to Aden (in the south), controls a large part of the southern and eastern parts of the country, which are equally vast but have far fewer inhabitants.

The conflict intensified in September when the rebels, within a matter of 24 hours, launched a deadly assault and seized the entire Yemeni coastline along the Red Sea, consolidating their control over the strategically important Bab el-Mandeb Strait, which connects Europe to Asia via the Suez Canal.

They also announced the imposition of a naval blockade on Saudi Arabia, the world’s largest exporter of crude oil, and targeted the kingdom’s oil infrastructure and tankers, as well as the capital, Riyadh, for the first time in years.

Last Saturday, the powerful Gulf monarchy announced that it had intercepted two drones “launched by the Houthi terrorist paramilitary organization toward the Riyadh area.”

Against this backdrop, schools in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, announced yesterday, Sunday, that they would switch to distance learning for one week.

Despite daily Saudi airstrikes and ongoing ground battles, the forces of Yemen’s internationally recognized government and Riyadh have been unable to force Ansar Allah to retreat, and calls for international assistance have remainedunanswered at this stage.

Last Saturday, Ansar Allah accused the Saudi Arabian Air Force of carrying out 27 airstrikes in various parts of the country.
