VIDEO: New escalation in Yemen; the Houthis struck Aramco in Riyadh

Bombings in Sanaa: Rebels Launch Attack Using Ballistic Missiles and Drones
ALPHANEWSLIVE

The Yemeni government army announced today that it had bombed the capital, Sanaa, which is controlled by the Shiite Houthi rebels, who, for their part, stated that on Saturday they targeted facilities belonging to the Saudi oil company Aramco in Riyadh.

Hostilities between the Houthis on one side and Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s internationally recognized government on the other have shown no signs of de-escalating since July, when they began, opening a new front in the war in the Middle East.

The Houthis have already announced twice that they have targeted facilities belonging to the Saudi Arabian oil giant: in September in the port city of Yanbu—the kingdom’s main oil terminal—and in August in the southern part of the country.

Houthi forces “launched a large-scale military operation using numerous ballistic missiles and drones to strike Aramco in the capital of the Saudi enemy,” said the movement’s military spokesman, Yahya Sari.

“The precise and direct strikes” caused “fires at the targeted facilities,” he added.

An AFP reporter reported yesterday that he saw flames and smoke rising from an Aramco facility south of Riyadh.

Saudi authorities have not yet commented on the incident.

Meanwhile, the Al Masirah television network, which is affiliated with the Houthis, reported that “enemy aircraft” carried out 26 strikes against Sana’a during the day—which was targeted for the first time in years on Thursday, according to the Houthis—without mentioning any casualties.

Yemeni government forces subsequently claimed in a statement “devastating strikes against vital targets of the Houthi terrorist militia in Sana’a and Sa’ada,” without providing further details.

In Sana’a, an AFP correspondent heard at least five explosions in different parts of the city, while another saw two fighter jets firing missiles.

Al Masirah also reported that Saudi missile strikes were launched against “the telecommunications network in the province of Sa’ada,” a Houthi stronghold in northern Yemen.

“Catastrophic Crisis”

The conflict in Yemen intensified in September following thelightning offensive by the Houthis, who seized the country’s coastal areas bordering the Red Sea, thereby strengthening their control over the Bab al-Mandab Strait.

The importance of this strait for global shipping has increased following the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz —a strategic conduit for global hydrocarbon trade on the other side of the Arabian Peninsula—following the outbreak of war in Iran.

The Houthis’ most recent ground offensive has killed hundreds of people and exacerbated the humanitarian crisis facing Yemen.

The malnutrition crisis in Yemen, the poorest country on the Arabian Peninsula, risks becoming “utterly catastrophic,” the World Food Program (WFP) warned on Friday.

Riyadh’s appeals for international aid, primarily from the U.S., have so far gone unanswered.
