A Nigerian Air Force aircraft crashed today in the southern part of the country with 32 people on board, according to the military and Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation.

“Initial reports indicate that there were 25 passengers and 7 crew members on board the aircraft,” Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo said in a post on X.

The military aircraft crashed near a naval base in Odo State, in the southwestern part of the country, after losing contact with air traffic control while en route to Lagos, according to the Aviation Minister.

Kegiamo emphasized in a statement that air traffic controllers lost contact with the aircraft at 11:13 (Cyprus time) and were unable to reestablish communication before its disappearance was reported.

The wreckage was later located near a naval base in the coastal town of Igbokonda, and search and rescue operations are underway, he added. There was no immediate confirmation of casualties from the plane crash.

This is one of the most serious military aircraft accidents in Nigeria in recent years and is expected to lead to stricter oversight of flight safety and operational readinessas authorities investigate the causes of the incident.
