VIDEO: The most powerful solar telescope reveals what's really happening on the Sun's surface

The new discovery that changes everything we thought we knew, stunning images
ALPHANEWSLIVE

This is not a work of art, but rather a series of impressive scientific observations published in the leading scientific journal *Nature* that reveal what is actually happening on the Sun’s surface.

From Hawaii, the most powerful solar telescope the world has ever seen captures, in unprecedented detail, gigantic swirling plasma vortices, a phenomenon that, according to scientists, is behind the creation of space weather and provides new insight into how energy is transported and released on the Sun.

“It was truly fascinating, because it was unlike anything we had seen before. And from that very moment, we knew we had discovered something very important.”
Friedrich Vogger – Astronomer

The scientists observed the so-called Kelvin–Helmholtz instability, a phenomenon that occurs when two layers of fluid move at different speeds, creating enormous spiral vortices that distort the magnetic field and store a vast amount of energy.

“It plays a very important role there, in the processes and overall dynamics of the Sun. In this way, it helps create a kind of energy reservoir, which is released and contributes to heating the outer layers.”
David Kuritz – Astronomer

A better understanding of these mechanisms is expected to lead to more reliable predictions of solar activity, enabling the timely protection of satellites, telecommunications systems, power grids, and space missions.

On their own, however, the images are impressive not only for their scientific value but also for their aesthetic appeal.

“It’s truly remarkable to see such artistic forms emerge naturally from the Sun’s physics. They often give me the impression that nature has its own artistic touch.”
Ruizu Chen – Solar Physicist at Stanford University

According to scientists, this discovery will help us better understand not only the mechanisms that cause space weather, but also one of the greatest mysteries of solar physics: why the upper layers of the Sun’s atmosphere are much hotter than its visible surface.
