“It was made with love, for the children of Guaira,” the victims of the earthquakes that killed more than 5,000 people on June 24, said 50-year-old Clarice Antauro, as she cut slices from the enormous cake—several meters long and decorated in the colors of the Venezuelan flag. “Despite everything that has happened, we hope that we will move forward,” added the volunteer.
Twenty-five people took part in making the dessert, “the largest” in Venezuela, measuring 7.7 meters long and 1.6 meters wide, and weighing more than 330 kilograms, explained Vilman Villiegas, one of the organizers of the initiative, which was supported by many local organizations in Caracas.
“It’s a record for Venezuela, but it’s not a trophy we’ll put in a display case; we made it to give this cake to people in need. We’ll take pieces of the cake to centers where young children are being cared for,” she assured.

About 3,000 slices of the cake will be distributed to children in Guaira today, July 19, on “Children’s Day” in Venezuela. More than 20,000 people are living in tents or makeshift shelters in the aftermath of the earthquakes.
“We are giving the children, who are going through a difficult time, a little joy, happiness, solidarity, and hope. The Venezuelan flag symbolizes the homeland that will continue to show great resilience, despite this horrific tragedy,” continued Villlegas.
