According to authorities, the training tram came to a sudden stop in the city center, near the Veltins Arena. The next train in line, which was carrying passengers, collided with the rear of the training tram, which was either stationary or moving at a very low speed, according to a police spokesperson.
According to NTV, 25 to 30 people were injured in the collision. “Based on the information available so far, seven are seriously injured, while three are in particularly critical condition and the risk to their lives cannot be ruled out,” the police reported.
The causes that led to the sudden stoppage of the training tram on the city’s main thoroughfare remain under investigation. A special traffic accident investigation team, as well as a large contingent of EKAΒ and fire department personnel, are on the scene.
The area around Kurt-Schumacher Street remained cordoned off for several hours after the accident, while tram service was completely suspended in both directions.
