Anger continues to rage unabated in France, manifesting itself in violent clashes between citizens and police in central Paris for nearly a week now. George Tasiopoulos, Ph.D. in Political Science, stated on the Alpha News program that the social unrest is directly linked to the Europe-wide surge in rent and utility costsenergy, as well as with the sense of disillusionment among young people toward politicians.

Mr. Tasiopoulos speaks of a deep political crisis and identifies as the main cause of the incidents the widespread loss of public trust in institutions and citizens’ frustration with the stance taken by traditional political parties toward their everyday problems.

The Ph.D. in Political Science warned that the situation will drive citizens toward “extremists and populists,” while noting France’s “governance vacuum” due to the lack of a parliamentary majority for Emmanuel Macron’s party and the lack of cooperation among the parties.

“Macron made the mistake a few years ago of dissolving the National Assembly and calling for elections, just like Jacques Chirac. That’s where the trouble began, with many measures and decisions unable to be passed, and everyone looking out for their own political interests rather than finding solutions to problems.”
