U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegesez announced on Wednesday that he is implementing a new screening program for “testosterone deficiency” among soldiers, describing it as essential for them to perform at the “absolute peak” of their abilities.

The screenings will be conducted annually as part of mandatory medical examinations for service members aged 30 and older. For those under 30, participation is voluntary.

In a video posted on social media, Hegeseth also stated that testosterone replacement therapy will be voluntary. The initiative “is not about artificial performance enhancement,” he added.

This move, according to the Associated Press, comes at a time when other Trump administration officials have begun advocating for easier access to testosterone replacement therapy for men. However, the messages from Hegese and others combine well-established scientific data on the hormone with broader and less substantiated claims.

The Pentagon explained that the measure aims to keep soldiers “strong, resilient, and capable” and that the challenges of the modern battlefield require “maximum psychological and mental readiness.”

In recent years, special operations forces have been under scrutiny for the use of testosterone and similar substances to enhance their performance. The death of a Navy SEAL recruit during a training exercise in 2022 led to the discovery of substances in his possession, including testosterone, and revealed that their use in the elite and highly demanding program was far more widespread than had been recognized.
