– The big win over Barcelona

– The meetings N.H. didn’t want

– Santi is here and has a lot to say!

– Who’s behind Phidias?

Have a great day. In this country, we’ll never get bored! Long live our political leaders—they spread so much joy that they’re turning us into the happiest people on earth. At the top of the list this week is, rightfully so, Yiannis Karousos and his sensational commentary on Barca!

  • What Ministry of Foreign Affairs and what Cyprus Football Association? What changed Barcelona’s decision to hold a soccer camp in the occupied territories was Karousos’s chilling post “I used to support Barcelona—but as of today, that’s over.” As I’ve been told, such panic broke out at the team’s offices that President Joan Laporta was shouting in the hallways, “No podemos dejar que Caruso se vaya” (We can’t let Caruso leave).
  • Caruso’s best line was this: “I supported it (Barça) for its history, for the values I believed it represented, for ‘Més que un club’—more than just a club”. What our dear Giannis may not realize is that this “something more than a club” refers to the strong push for Catalan autonomy that exists among both the team’s leadership and its fans. The main chant in the stands is “Visca el Barça! Visca Catalunya!” and expresses the Catalans’ political stance on secession and self-determination. A bit risky for “us” here in Cyprus.
  • In any case, we must admit that the government (with Karousos’s unquestioning support) has had many successes during this period. It managed to cancel the music festival in Kyrenia, it managed to cancel the Barcelona soccer camp, and it even made it difficult for the Turkish Cypriot negotiator to brief foreign diplomats… Everything indicates that we are moving toward a solution to the Cyprus problem and that the President was right not to go on vacation so he could work toward this major goal. Now, one has to wonder how much time he has left to actually work on the substance of the issue after all this “strategy of deterrence.”
  • Mr. Christodoulides, let’s not kid ourselves. This “success” of the weekly meetings with Erhurman does not bear your stamp of approval. Because I know very well that when the issue was raised in Guterres’s presence, your position was that meetings would take place only when they had substance. Now that we’ve reached the end of August, you’ve decided to go along with it, since you know that there might be 3–4 meetings before the UN General Assembly toward the end of September. And that way, we’ll show that something is happening—which is also necessary for the election campaign that has begun.
  • We’re moving on from the Cyprus issue, which, in any case, doesn’t have (and won’t have) anything significant coming up in the near future. The important thing is that Santi has appeared! This girl who turned the whole of Cyprus upside down and took on all sorts of people—she really does exist, and—as I’ve been told—we may soon see her on our screens as well. You see, the trial is about to begin, and everyone is preparing their defense. In any case, as I’ve heard, Santi says there are many other messages containing her fantasies (about how she supposedly left for Germany in an adventurous way, parties with Albert of Monaco…) that the other two main characters didn’t dare to reveal. Get ready, because this soap opera is going to break all the ratings records this year.
  • Nikos Anastasiadis is also preparing his defense in the “Mafia State” case. That’s why, over the summer, he prepared an extensive analysis (26 pages) on the Anti-Corruption Authority’s findings, which, as I was informed, he sent to various lawyers and journalists. With his own note stating, “I would find any comments you may have to be very useful.” Now, how and why this text was made public before its recipients had even had a chance to study it properly is a mystery. And perhaps Anastasiades isn’t even to blame.
  • As if everything else weren’t enough, we also have Phaedias Panagiotou, who has found the “magic solution” for lowering electricity prices. Of course, to be fair, Phidias doesn’t really understand these things; someone else is pulling his strings for their own purposes. Personally, I know who it is, but I’ll give him a little more time in case he decides to step forward himself instead of hiding behind Pheidias.
  • However, Pheidias would do well to explain who this friend of his is who gave him a honeymoon worth 10,000 euros as a gift. He announced it himself, even though he later deleted the post. When a Member of the European Parliament accepts gifts of this kind—and even publicizes his lavish vacation—the public has a right to know where these funds come from and why such sponsorships are being provided. At the very least, those who voted for him should know.
  • So what happened in the end, Mr. Fytiris? Did the President’s office put the brakes on your ambitious and entirely justified plan to reduce the security details for public figures? I hear there was an uproar from some of the politicians most affected, resulting in the government backing down. How many years have we been discussing this issue without ever achieving the slightest progress? And the truth is that with Fytiris, we were expecting a different outcome.
  • I must express my boundless love and support for our dear Stella Kyriakidou as she faces her new battle with cancer. A woman who has learned to fight not only for herself but for all of us. A symbol of strength and optimism who proves it once again by announcing her new ordeal herself. After all, there are shining examples even in the world of politics.

I wish everyone a happy Sunday. It’s the last Sunday of summer, though temperature-wise, we still have a long way to go.
