A rocky road to declaring assets: The rich and poor among parliamentary seats

From the personal data blunder to the corrected posts
ALPHANEWSLIVE

The breach of personal data resulting from the blunder by the Parliament’s services—which posted, without processing or redacting sensitive information, MPs’ personal asset declarations online. Of course, even with the corrected posts, the data does not provide an accurate picture, since the declarations are once again being filled out arbitrarily. Some declare furniture and appliances as assets, while others do not declare them at all, once again providing fodder for various discussions beyond the intended purpose of the audit.

The Speaker of the House and president of DISY stated on June 4 that she owns real estate with a total value of €222,500. These include a half-share in a residential lot that was a gift, a half-share in a residential plot of land, and a two-story residence. She also listed a private vehicle valued at €13,000, deposits in seven accounts totaling €133,100, and four loans totaling €144,050. Her total net worth amounts to €239,550.

The total net worth of the General Secretary of AKEL amounts to €116,488. The value of his real estate amounts to €140,035, consisting of a plot of land with a residence and another plot of land. He acquired these through loans, contributions from his parents, and savings. In addition, he holds shares worth €450 and deposits totaling €43,977. Three loans totaling €15,003, a loan from the Provident Fund amounting to €24,411, and another loan from AKEL amounting to €28,560.

The President of ELAM, with total assets of €52,345.04, declared in May real estate worth €241,500 from a second share in a residence he acquired through a loan, as well as four plots of land that were donated to him. A vehicle valued at €2,000, deposits totaling €5,518.34, and three loans totaling €196,673.30.

Last month, the president of DIKO declared real estate assets totaling €958,807, which pertains solely to his residence, while he also reported seven other properties/offices that were received as donations.  He owns two vehicles with a combined value of €67,000 and has total deposits of €788 across three accounts. With the three loans he included in the declaration, totaling €41,471, his net worth amounts to €985,124

. “I own 22 properties with zero value in the free and occupied areas, Odysseas Michaelides declared last July. All inherited. His net worth, however, amounts to €212,783. He had declared a vehicle worth €27,000, deposits in seven accounts totaling €93,258, three insurance policies worth €193,810, and six loans totaling €101,285.

The youngest member of parliament, Ephraim Christou, responds to the discussions sparked by his own declaration, which was submitted in June. With deposits of 10 euros and 32 cents, as well as a vehicle worth 7,000 euros.

EFRAIM CHRISTOU—AKEL Member of Parliament“
This is the state of society today, and a 24-year-old cannot save money when wages are so low and rents and the cost of living are at an all-time high. Do they know what a statement of assets is, the declaration you submit when you take office—because I’ve seen comments from people who don’t know any better, saying, ‘In five months in Parliament, he hasn’t managed to save anything?’”

All this while DIKO MP Zacharias Koulias reported a negative balance in his declaration on October 2.  He declared six plots of land, one building, and a ground-floor residence in Rizokarpaso as a gift. In his declaration, Mr. Koulias did not include anything else (cars, bank deposits, dividends) and listed only six loans totaling over 800,000 euros.

In contrast, Giorgos Pamporidis ranks among the wealthiest, with a net worth in June reaching 3,373,000 euros. The same goes for Christiana Erotokritou, whose net worth in May—when she filed her declaration—amounted to 1,254,000 euros, followed by Fotini Tsiridou, whose net worth amounts to 996,892 euros.
