Against the backdrop of the recent appointments to the boards of directors of semi-governmental organizations, AKEL has come out with harsh criticism of the Christodoulides government and speaks of the de facto abolition the institution of the Advisory Council.
As it emphasizes in a statement, the need for true meritocracy and transparency has once again come to the forefront.
The statement reads as follows:
Semi-governmental organizations are not the spoils of the government in power
The new appointments confirm the effective abolition of the Advisory Council. An institution that was presented as a guarantee of meritocracy has ended up legitimizing choices that serve political expediency and partisan balances.
The near-total exclusion of the Left undermines the government’s proclamations of meritocracy and restricts pluralism and democratic oversight, while questions also arise from allegations of potential incompatibility and conflicts of interest in specific appointments.
The Christodoulides government continues to follow the same philosophy as the Anastasiades–DISY administration, which treats public offices as spoils of political power.
Quasi-governmental organizations are not a place to reward political allies. They manage critical infrastructure and public assets and require capable, independent leadership committed to the public nature and social mission of these organizations.
