AKEL condemns the unacceptable claims made against Cyprus by Recep Tayyip Erdoğan from the podium of the UN General Assembly.
As the party states in its announcement, Tayyip Erdoğan, speaking from the rostrum of the United Nations General Assembly, once again reiterated Turkey’s unacceptable positions and claims at the expense of Cyprus.
“His insistence on approaches that conflict with the agreed-upon basis for a solution to the Cyprus problem and a host of Security Council resolutions of the international organization, at a time when efforts are being made to resume substantive negotiations, constitutes an enormous challenge. Its insistence on the unacceptable demand for international recognition of the “TRNC,” recognition of sovereign equality, and equal international status for the pseudo-state, violates relevant UN resolutions, is incompatible with international law, and will never be accepted by the Cypriot people.”
As the Leftist party adds, “In the face of this unacceptable stance by the occupying power, our response can be neither resignation nor compromise with the divisive status quo. On the contrary, as the UN Secretary-General himself has emphasized, our efforts must be geared toward creating the necessary conditions for the resumption of talks from the point where they were suspended in 2017, with full respect for all the agreements reached and the Guterres Framework.”
The only path to ending the Turkish occupation and reunifying our homeland is that of an agreed-upon solution of a bicommunal, bizonal federation with political equality, adds AKEL, “which will free us from the occupying forces and foreign guarantors. A solution that can contribute to peace, stability, and security in the broader Middle East region.”
