AKEL is launching a full-scale attack against the government and the leadership of the Legal Service, against the backdrop of the handling of the Anti-Corruption Authority’s findings regarding the “State-Mafia” case.
Citing the immediate conflicts of interest that arose in the appointments of criminal investigators, the left-wing party holds the Christodoulides government accountable and urgently raises the issue of the heads of the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
As emphasized in the statement, the immediate resignation of Messrs. Savvides and Angelides is a necessary prerequisite for genuine transparency, accountability, and a clean slate. The party stresses that their close relationship with the former President of the Republic makes it impossible to objectively evaluate any investigative work.
The statement in its entirety
The resignations of the General Prosecutor and the Deputy General Prosecutor will pave the way for accountability and a thorough investigation
The Christodoulides government appointed criminal investigators to look into the Anti-Corruption Authority’s report on the “State-Mafia” case, and an obvious conflict of interest was immediately identified regarding one of them. This raises questions about the government’s seriousness and accountability in this process. As for the latest recusal, it seems to be becoming a standard practice and ultimately amounts to self-defeat.
In any case, however, the elephant in the room is something else entirely. It is Messrs. Savvidis and Angelidis who are at the helm of the Prosecutor’s Office, and they are the ones who will have the final say in evaluating any investigative or inquisitorial work. It is an insult to the intelligence of the public to expect them to believe that two ministers appointed by Anastasiades, ministers in the Anastasiades government and friends of Anastasiades will decide whether Anastasiades and his associates will be prosecuted. AKEL demands their immediate resignation. This will pave the way for a clean slate and accountability.
