Developments on Pindarou Street are unfolding rapidly, following the decision by DISY President Annita Dimitriou to withdraw her bid for the party’s nomination as its candidate for the 2028 presidential election. Averof Neophytou and Giorgos Pamporidis will ultimately participate in the party’s internal election process, scheduled for November 28, 2026.
Following a joint meeting with Averof Neophytou and George Pamporidis in her office on the fifth floor of the Democratic Alarm’s Central Offices, Anita Dimitriou, with the two men by her side, announced that as party president she cannot allow division.
“This is entirely my own decision, made without any pressure.”
Ms. Dimitriou clarified that the process will be conducted within a democratic framework and will safeguard her colleagues’ right to “run” in it.
“DISY is bigger than any individual. Above all else is the unity and cohesion of the party.”
Averof Neophytou and Giorgos Pamboridis reserved the right to issue statements on the matter later in the day.
The background to the joint meeting
Prior to the announcement of Ms. Dimitriou’s decision, separate meetings were held with Neophytou and Pamboridis that lasted approximately two and a half hours, while the DISY Executive Bureau met in the morning to discuss internal party procedures.
Reports from Alpha Cyprus mention the presence of the publisher of the newspaper “Alithia,” Frixos Koulermos, at the office of the DISY President prior to the joint meeting with Averof and Pamporidis. The same sources report that Ms. Dimitriou also met today with a close associate, who reportedly suggested ways to foster unity within the party.
