The need to resume substantive negotiations on the Cyprus issue is a top priority for the Democratic Rally, stressed President Annita Dimitriou during her speech yesterday at the Nicosia District Council.
As she noted, the Cyprus issue requires composure, collective effort, strategy, national unity, and responsibility, emphasizing that the Party is ready to contribute to and support the resumption of substantive negotiations. This, he said, is the only path to the liberation and reunification of the homeland, free of occupying forces, guarantees, and rights of intervention, while also making special mention of the need for close cooperation and full coordination with Greece.
The DISY President also referred to the convening of the Political Bureau, the meetings of the Cyprus Group, the briefing of the party’s elected officials in the occupied municipalities and communities, and, moving forward, the continuation of the dialogue at the district level.
Among other things, he described the outcome of the recent elections as a significant affirmation of the Democratic Alarm’s progress, thanking party officials and the public for their trust and support, noting that citizens had chosen seriousness and responsibility.
At the same time, he sent a message that Cyprus cannot afford inaction or experimentation and identified a number of issues as key challenges, such as housing, traffic, water, high electricity prices and the cost of living, the low birth rate, pensions, and others.
Regarding the broader issue of high prices, Ms. Dimitriou characterized the government’s handling of the matter as inadequate and misguided. She also emphasized the need for targeted measures as well as policies that will boost competitiveness, growth, small and medium-sized enterprises, and quality jobs.
At the same time, the DISY President emphatically stressed that the party will stand against populism and toxicity, no matter where they come from. She also stressed that DISY was not created to merely observe developments but to shape them, recalling the party’s contribution to Cyprus’s European path, its Western orientation, economic development, and the strengthening of the country’s international relations.
In closing, he announced a new round of outreach visits to Local Committees, with the participation of District Secretariats and Members of Parliament, aimed at maintaining continuous contact with the grassroots and society.
“The Democratic Alarm is here. More organized. More determined. More prepared,” he said, emphasizing that the Party will continue to defend stability, support society, and work toward a European, modern, and competitive Cyprus.
