A Flurry of Reactions were sparked by the announcement of appointments to the new boards of directors at semi-governmental organizations, with allegations of appointments made without applications and the appointment of an individual with a conflict of interest.

The Independent Telecommunications Workers’ Union (ASET-Cyta) was the first to voice its objections, stating that in the case of a member of CYTA’s Board of Directors, there is a conflict of interest and institutional incompatibility.

According to ASET-Cyta, the spouse of the individual in question works at Cyta as the secretary to a senior executive. The union cites Article 3B of the Law on Certain Legal Entities under Public Law (Appointment of Boards of Directors) of 1988, arguing that this specific relationship falls under the circumstances that preclude such an appointment.

The government appears to be moving forward with the removal of the member, following reactions from the Independent Telecommunications Workers’ Union (ASET-Cyta) regarding his appointment. Specifically, Deputy Government Spokesperson Yiannis Antoniou, speaking on SPOR FM radio, noted that in the spirit of good governance, the member appointed to Cyta’s Board of Directors will be removed and replaced. According to Mr. Antoniou, this individual had not disclosed, at the time of his appointment, his relationship with the quasi-governmental organization, which appears to have created a conflict of interest.

AKEL, in a statement, has strongly criticized the move, citing the exclusion of the Left, while in a new statement it alleges that it has received information that quite a few individuals were appointed to the boards of directors of quasi-governmental organizations without even having submitted an application.

“If this is confirmed, the Advisory Council was not merely bypassed. It was completely nullified and used as a pretext for the Christodoulides government and the parties supporting it to push through predetermined appointments.”

He emphasizes that the Chairman and members of the Advisory Council must explain why they tolerate a government that humiliates them, prioritizing its petty partisan interests over due process and meritocracy. “If appointments were indeed made without applications, they must submit their resignations; otherwise, they themselves will bear the political and institutional responsibility for the humiliation of the institution,” he concludes.
