Turkey’s
presence on the island is essential for the Turkish Cypriot “people,” who will not accept the withdrawal of Turkish troops from the island under any circumstances, according to a statement by the “Foreign Ministry,” which responded to Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letympiotis’s characterization of the guarantees as “outdated.”
As reported from the occupied territories, the so-called ministry claimed that what is “truly outdated and invalid” on the island is the Republic of Cyprus.
It maintains that Mr. Letympiotis’s statements regarding the need for Cyprus to become a “normal, modern, European state free of anachronistic guarantees and occupying armies” are the latest example of the outdated mindset faced by the Turkish Cypriot “people.”
The Greek Cypriot side, it is added, continues to claim that it represents the entire island and the Turkish Cypriots, maintaining its claim to the Republic of Cyprus, which “has remained invalid for more than half a century,” as the claim goes.
It is also argued that the invasion put an end to the suffering of the Turkish Cypriots and that the rapid military buildup by the Republic of Cyprus in recent years indicates that the guarantees of “motherland” Turkey—which constitutes the main guarantee of the Turkish Cypriots’ existence and security—can never be abandoned. Turkey’s presence on the island is essential for the Turkish Cypriot people. The Turkish Cypriot people will under no circumstances accept the withdrawal of Turkish troops from the island.”
The “Foreign Ministry” concludes by asserting that a lasting agreement on the island is possible only on the basis of cooperation between two independent and sovereign states and with the affirmation of sovereign equality and the equal internationalof the pseudo-state.
