DIPA Decides: What It Asked the President Following the Cabinet Reshuffle and What Will Happen with DIKO

Where are the talks on a coalition among the centrist parties?

The DIPA requested an update from President Christodoulides regarding the restructuring and the appointment of a representative to each quasi-governmental organization, with one request being fully acknowledged and the other being granted only partially.

“As far as the restructuring is concerned, we have not been briefed,” said Alekos Tryfonides, speaking on the Alpha Kalokairi program, while noting that the President acknowledged the oversight of failing to inform the party’s president.

When asked whether DIPA is dissatisfied that, even though it did not secure any seats in the parliamentary elections, it has two ministers, he stated that the announcement that the two ministers would remain in Nikos Christodoulides’ government had been made after the elections.

“We must admit this. We expected to be informed that a cabinet reshuffle would take place, even though the two ministerial positions would be retained.”

“Although we are retaining the two ministerial posts, there could have been further representation of the DIPA in the government,” adds Mr. Tryfonides, noting that what the DIPA wants is to express its views on the government’s overall work and presence.

When asked if he had corrected this oversight by consulting with DIPA regarding the quasi-governmental organizations, he replied that DIPA’s demand was for the appointment of one person to each quasi-governmental organization, specifically the largest ones.

“Not for any other reason. To implement the government’s policies and those we believe in. That did not happen. It was achieved to about 50%. There are major organizations where we have no presence. We have fought to preserve them—through proposals and positions—and we’ve also made recommendations on how they should develop.”

“We will evaluate all of this in September,” he notes, adding that he is part of the government. “We want to have a strong and productive presence to carry out this project,” he adds.

Responding to a question about whether there are discussions regarding a reunification of the centrist forces, with DIPA and DIKO joining forces, he answered in the affirmative, noting that the two party leaders agreed to continue consultations starting in September.

“For us, it is important that the unification of the center takes place on the basis of political positions that will be discussed and refined. But it must also be based on equality, not absorption. I think this has been understood by everyone, and I am optimistic that we can move forward; we will see how this plays out this coming September.”
