The Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomes today’s statement by the Federal Republic of Somalia, which reaffirms the country’s long-standing position on the Cyprus issue, guided by the United Nations Charter and the relevant resolutions of the United Nations Security Council, the Ministry’s Spokesperson, Theodoros Gotzis, told CNA.
The Somali government’s announcement followed a post earlier this week by the country’s new Speaker of the House, Abdulqadir Mohamed Nur, in which he referred to the “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus,” thanking the “speaker of the House” who congratulated him on his election to the office.
“Somalia reaffirms its full respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Cyprus, based on international law and the relevant Security Council resolutions concerning Cyprus, as well as its consistent support for efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue within the framework of the UN,” said Mr. Gotsis, referring to the statement by the Somali Ministry of Foreign Affairs on this issue.
As for the Republic of Cyprus, he added, “commitment to international law, the United Nations Charter, and respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states is a steadfast principle of our foreign policy. A principle that we consistently apply and that we demand with equal consistency for our own country,” he added.
Mr. Gotsis also noted that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs “is continuing its diplomatic efforts with determination and methodical precision to defend the interests, international standing, and sovereign rights of the Republic of Cyprus.”
In its statement, the Somali Ministry of Foreign Affairs notes that the “personal communication” post in question does not reflect and should not be interpreted as any change in the foreign policy of the Federal Republic of Somalia, and that “it does not constitute recognition of any separate entity in the northern part of Cyprus,” and that no decision has been made to amend its established position.
